Cathe Live: Get Steppin'

Cathe Live Review: Get Steppin’ (#90)

Get Steppin’ is a steady state cardio step workout. This is an enjoyable, intermediate level routine that I really liked and is perfect if you don’t want a lot of impact but still want to feel a little work.

There are two versions of Get Steppin’, in the Cathe archive, and both are really nice workouts that get you moving but are not too intense. For a detailed review of Get Steppin’ 2 (#162) – click HERE.

The workout consists of three main combos although the warm-up is a mini combo in itself. Each combination is a number of different step moves that are then strung together to form the full combo. These are a mix of more dancey type steps and a few more athletic moves. Cathe, as usual, does a great job of building up the combo in layers. This gives you a chance to learn the moves and practice them, several times, before adding on more. Once you have the full combo, you then repeat it two times, on each side, before a quick water break and moving onto the next combo.

The choreography is not too complex, if you are familiar with Cathe’s other step routines, but may take a little bit of patience for those less familiar or comfortable with step. This is definitely worth the effort to learn though as it’s a really fun one and the workout flew by.

The workout ends with all of the three combos being strung together and repeated twice on each side. You do this twice through before moving into the cool down. Cathe does have a few issues, in the final section, remembering the steps so there are a few false starts and a couple of do-overs until she gets it right.

Overall, this is a fun, intermediate level step cardio workout that’s great for a lighter day.

The Workout

Get Steppin’ is steady state cardio step workout consisting of three combos. After completing all of the combos you then string them together for the final combo. Cathe used a full size step, with one riser on each side, for this workout. You can obviously raise the step height further, if you prefer.

What you need to know: Instructor: Cathe Friedrich. Length: 44 mins. Equipment needed: Full size step with one riser on each side. Fun Factor: 4/5. Sweat Factor: 3/5. Coordination: 3/5

(Rating scale – 1= lowest & 5 = highest).

The Moves

Get Steppin’ is 44 minutes long and originally aired on 25th February 2016 (#90). The workout starts with a 9 minute step warm-up before moving into the first combo. The step, with one riser on each side, is set up horizontally in front of you at the start of the workout. You will need to ensure that there is space all around the step for this routine. The combos below are built up gradually and repeated several times before being put together for the finalised combo. Each is then repeated two times, on each side, before moving on. Only the final combos are shown below.

Combo 1

  • Step sweep around the step x2, 2 knee repeater, tap & 2 scissors

  • Elbow to knee, triples around the step, knee lift & hold at the bottom, shift across step & knee lift

  • Up jack, rock back & double jump, tap & turn, step, knee lift to front, up jack (other side), rock back & double jump, tap & turn, step, knee lift to front

Quick water break at 17:55 minutes

Combo 2

  • Mambo cha cha, pivot turn, cha cha

  • Knee off side of step, box step, cha cha

  • Up & back, jack, up & back, jack

  • Reverse V step x2, salute squats x3

  • 2 Big scoops on floor & 4 scuttles, kick corner to corner

Quick water break at 26:35 minutes

Combo 3

  • Rock horse on step, over face & over, side up (jumping) moving back x2, 1,2,3 step x2

  • Knee off the back, long hop turn x2, step, knee straddle

  • 3 Knee lifts around the corner of step (jumping) & 3 knee lifts around the other corner (jumping)

After Combo 3 (at 32:20 minutes) – Cathe tries to go straight into putting all of the combos together but gets lost so stops and takes a water break instead before trying again. She then has an issue with the music so gets the class to do jumping jacks before starting again at 33:47 minutes

Final Combo – Combo 1, 2 & 3 – twice through

The workout ends with a 3 minute cool down and stretch.
